Summary

This document is a report on the Human Rights Council Side Event, held June 6, 2011 in Geneva, in conjunction with the 17th Session of the Human Rights Council Meeting. Human Rights Watch, the Open Society Public Health Program's International Palliative Care Initiative (IPCI)and Law and Health Initiative(LAHI)organized a panel discussion on "Access to Palliative Care: A Neglected Component of the Right to Health." The event was cosponsored by the Permanent Missions of Brrazil and Uraguay, as well as the African Palliative Care Association (APCA),HelpAge International, International Association for Hospice and Palliatve Care (IAHPC),Pallium India,Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS(UNAIDS),and Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance(WPCA). The panel discussion focused on human rights mechanisms to address globabl challenges that hamper access to pain and palliative care treatment
